Viet Nam, Australia advance cooperation in digital economy, strategic technologies and innovation
Viet Nam and Australia have ample room to further expand cooperation in science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, particularly after the two countries elevated their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
On May 25, 2026, in Ha Noi, Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan held a working session with Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam Gillian Bird to exchange views on key areas of cooperation between the two countries in the coming period.
At the working session, Ambassador Gillian Bird affirmed that science, technology, innovation and digital transformation are important areas of cooperation under the Viet Nam - Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two sides are continuing efforts to advance the Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Economy, the second phase of the Australia - Viet Nam Strategic Technologies Centre, as well as activities to strengthen research, education and technology linkages between the two countries.
An overview of the working session.
Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan spoke highly of Viet Nam - Australia cooperation in science, technology, innovation and digital transformation. He emphasised that cooperation programmes should be practical, focused and aligned with Viet Nam's priorities in strategic technology development.
The Minister proposed that, in the coming time, the two sides focus on several key areas:
- Accelerating the completion of the Memorandum of Understanding on Digital Economy, considering it an important pillar of bilateral cooperation.
- Implementing the second phase of the Australia – Viet Nam Strategic Technologies Centre, with priority given to selecting specific tasks for joint funding and product development.
- Strengthening connections among research institutes, universities and technology enterprises of the two countries.
- Coordinating the organisation of cooperation forums on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation, especially in digital economy and strategic technologies.
- Preparing concrete cooperation contents for upcoming high-level visits and working sessions between the two countries.
