Viet Nam, South Korea chart course for sovereign AI development

On the morning of October 1, 2026, in Seoul, Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan held a working session with Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT of South Korea.

The two sides discussed implementation plans for the Framework on Science and Technology Cooperation signed during South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's visit to Viet Nam in April 2026, aiming toward concrete programs across strategic technology sectors.

The focus of the meeting was the strategic orientation for developing sovereign AI. The two countries will explore cooperation in data, computing infrastructure, foundational AI models, workforce training, and ecosystem development tailored to each nation's language, culture, governance requirements, and practical needs.

Overview of the working session

The two ministers also exchanged views on cooperation in the semiconductor industry, robotics, smart factories, and physical AI; promoting linkages among research institutes, universities, and enterprises; and strengthening joint research, technology transfer, and expert training. These initiatives are expected to enhance technological autonomy, drive digital transformation, and generate fresh momentum for growth in both nations./.
